Female Urology

Female urology is a branch of urology dealing with overactive bladder, frequent urinary tract invections, pelvic organ prolapse, various pelvic pain syndroms, and urinary incontinence. Depending on the cause of the individual problem a medical or surgical treatment can be the solution.

Female Urologic conditions treated by Dr. Plawner include:

  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Overactive Bladder Syndrome (OAB)
  • Painful Bladder Syndrome (Intestitial Cystitis)
  • Pelvic Organs Prolapse
  • Genitourinary Pelvic Reconstruction

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain can be caused by pelvic floor spasms, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Interstitial Cystitis (or painful bladder syndrome IC/PBS), and Endometriosis. Different doctors treat these different conditions: Urology doctors treat pelvic floor spasms and Interstitial Cystitis. Gastrointestinal specialists treat irritable bowel syndrome, while gynecologists treat endometriosis.

Pelvic floor spasms occur when the muscles that surround the urethra tighten. Treatment includes warm baths, exercises, and, occasionally, medication and/or physical therapy. IC (interstitial cystytis) is a condition in which the bladder becomes inflamed and irritated. Symptoms include frequency of urination and pelvic pain, with some women’s symptoms often getting worse during menstruation. There are many successful interventions for treating Interstitial Cystitis, so consultation with a urology specialist is recommended.

Pelvic Floor Prolapse

Pelvic floor prolapse means that the pelvic organs fall into the vaginal canal. This causes the sensation of fullness in the vagina. The organs that can fall include the bladder, the uterus, the rectum, and the small intestine. There are various ways in which this problem may be addressed and pelvic floor repaired.
